Works closely with the shift supervisor to oversee the operations and performance of their assigned shift. Assumes the role of supervisor in the supervisor’s absence. Provides clinical care at the paramedic level.  Sets an example for employees in regards to attitude, work ethic, professionalism, and advocacy for the EMS department. Manages the Quality Management System for their respective shift to include audit and review of patient care documentation, recognition and correction of skill/knowledge deficiency noted through the CQI process and recording appropriate benchmarks. Works as a preceptor for new employees and documents accurately any concerns about an employee’s ability to perform their duties. Responsible for on shift training opportunities, skills review, and annual competencies.  Works in direct relationship and contact with the Shift Supervisor and Quality Manager.   

Essential Functions:
  1. Ability to effectively supervise employees
  2. Acts as a role model within and outside the work environment
  3. Demonstrates flexible and efficient time management and ability to prioritize workload
  4. Maintains a positive and respectful attitude
  5. Reviews documentation of patient care carefully for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with standard of care as well as protocols
  6. Maintains a thorough knowledge of policies and procedures
  7. Safely operating an ambulance or other emergency vehicle
  8. Administering appropriate medical care to sick or injured persons
  9. Accurate and concise documentation of all care
  10. Participate in the upkeep of station equipment, vehicles and quarters
  11. Provide care in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques as outlined in the patient care protocols for your specific certification level
  12. Tact, courtesy and firmness are required in dealing with sick or injured persons and with the general public
  13. Responds to emergency calls as a driver or attendant; performs necessary rescue work; and administers necessary emergency medical care
  14. Ability to communicate effectively via telephone and radio equipment
  15. Ability to use good judgment and remain calm in high stress situations
  16. Ability to withstand varied environmental conditions such as extreme heat, cold, and moisture
  17. Ability to work in low light situations and confined spaces
  18. Ability to be unaffected by loud noises and flashing lights

Job Requirements


High school diploma or equivalent is required
Required License:
Valid NC Driver’s License
Required Certification: 
North Carolina EMT-Paramedic Certification
