The Behavioral Health Unit (BHU) serves adults with severe and persistent mental illness who are experiencing an acute exacerbation of their psychiatric symptoms requiring voluntary or involuntary admission to a psychiatric inpatient unit. Patients may also have co-occurring substance abuse/dependence. This position will assist with all aspects of support services for patients under the direction of Unit Nurse Manager and Clinical Program Manager. The most important responsibility of the CMHA is to ensure the safety of patients and staff.  CMHAs are expected to provide services in a manner consistent with Recovery philosophy.

  1. Provides treatment support services including monitoring and supervision of patients, assisting with meals, taking vitals, assisting clients with completion of daily living skills and wellness recovery action plans, facilitating recovery education groups and peer support techniques (for staff with peer support specialist training).
  2. Ensures the safety of patients and staff by initiating all behavioral interventions as trained (in CPI and crisis de-escalation) and seeking the necessary authorization from the appropriate persons when restrictive interventions are employed. Provides visual monitoring and personal searches of all clients per acuity protocol.  Patients’ rights will be respected at all times and staff will adhere to the concept of least restrictive intervention.
  3. Willingness to help provide front desk support/unit secretary functions as needed.
  4. Responsible for accurate communication and completion of any assigned paperwork and documentation necessary for medical records or billing purposes.
  5. Accepts responsibility for updating and increasing skills and knowledge through training and continuing education.
  6. Promotes a harmonious working environment by communicating clearly and working cheerfully and cooperatively with co-workers, other hospital employees, supervisors, patient, family members, physicians, and the general public.

Job Requirements

Education :  Graduation from high school or equivalent is required.   Bachelors Degree in Healthcare, Psychology, Counseling or related field is preferred.  Must complete CPI within 90 days of hire.

Experience :  Minimum six (6) months experience working with population served or completion of Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) and Peer Support Specialist training or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).  Knowledge of Recovery and Wellness Philosophy.
