Providence Heart and Vascular Institute (located within Providence Health's downtown hospital) is actively recruiting a Physician Assistant to join an established group of physicians and physician assistants.
 
Responsibilities include admission history and physicals, pre and post-operative patient management, endoscopic saphenous vein harvesting, discharge summaries, pre-op assessments. Call every 4th weekend and one night weekly. Must be a graduate of an accredited PA program and NCCPA certified.  Current SC PA license required and 2 years of surgery preferred.

Essential Functions
  • Function as first or second assistant in the operating room including performing surgical exposure, surgical dissections, layer closure of wounds, harvesting of autologous graft materials, and application of immobilization devices. Assist with use of monitoring devices, including radiographic equipment as necessary.
     
  • Complete individual daily rounds on all inpatients and documentation of medical plan. Participate in rounding with Attending Physician several times per week (or as needed).
     
  • Provide routine medical management of inpatient care including ordering of diagnostic tests, labs, x-rays, medications (within the scope of the PA license) and nutrition, managing adjunctive care. Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and communication of treatment plans with orthopedic physician, nursing staff, and families.
     
  • Conduct procedures (under direction and appropriate level of supervision of the Attending Physician), including but not limited to: placement of indwelling lines and catheters , placement of skeletal hardware, management of closed fractures, aspiration/injection of burse, joints, ten synovia, anatomic compartments, and cysts.
     
  • Prepare patients for surgery, including education, positioning, skin preparation and administration of local anesthetic, and preparation of equipment.
     
  • Review all pertinent films, CT Scans, MRI, cardiac cath and angiograms, etc. Issue standing orders as developed by the cardiovascular surgeons.
     
  • Coordinate admission paperwork with other departments.
     
  • Review patient medical record on admission. Determine follow-up labs and tests needed. Communicate status of admission to surgeon.
     
  • Perform physician examination and history to patients. (Physician will continue to do his own history and physical prior to each surgery).
     
  • May write prescriptive orders as directed and countersigned by the physician.
     
  • Pre-op all patient for surgery including appropriate labs, x-rays and studies. Follow-up on results. Treat and develop plan for abnormal results.
     
  • Pull chest tubes, suture and debride wounds.
     
  • Provide follow-up and health maintenance care including the appropriate adjustment of medications in accordance with established protocols or in response to specific instructions from the Attending Physician.

Job Requirements

Experience
2-5 years PA experience.
 
Education
Physician Assistant Degree
 
Required Licenses
[South Carolina, United States] Physician Assistants
Certification by NCCPA. Licensure or eligible for licensing as a Physician's Assistant in the State of South Carolina.
