POSITION SUMMARY:  

Organizes, directs, and supervises thefunctions of the Laboratory department. Assures that policy and procedures are followed; proper qualifiedstaffing levels are maintained; supplies and equipment are at sufficientlevels; that an efficient department is integrated with the other departmentsin the hospital.  Develops and implementsthe department budget.  Assures on goingperformance improvement, attending all required meetings, encouragingeducational improvement and assures that employees complete required yearlyforums, for reviews and competencies.


Essential Functions:
  1. Demonstratesthat department’s services are integrated with the hospital’s primaryfunctions.
  2. Coordinatesand integrates services within Lab with other departments.
  3. Demonstratesthat policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of servicesare developed and implemented.
  4. Assures thatall department policies, procedures and records are current and documented.
  5. Plans,directs, and monitors the scheduling, budgeting, and utilization of qualified,competent persons to provide services.
  6. Determinesthe qualifications and competence of department personnel to fulfill thehospital’s requirements for patient care in all age groups.
  7. Assures thatcompetent staff is provided through proper review of experience and credentialsduring interview of applicants, and after hiring, confirms education,experience and abilities during the initial orientation period.
  8. Continuallyassesses and review staff in regard to performance throughout the year with aformal performance and competency review annually.
  9. Encouragesstaff to continue educational development for performance improvement.
  10. Demonstratescontinuous assessment and improvement of department’s performance
  11. Develops anddemonstrates effective performance and quality improvement programs for thedepartment.
  12. Maintains appropriate quality control programs.
  13. Demonstrates that orientation, in-service training andcontinuing education of all persons in department is provided.
  14. Assures that adequate equipment, supplies and space areavailable.
  15. Participates in selecting outside sources for neededservices.
  16. Works with appropriate Senior Leader and participates inthe development and achievement of Hospital goals and objectives
  17. Develops, implements, and maintains the annual operatingbudget, ensuring that operations are managed within the established guidelines.
  18. Provides directionand support to staff to assure departmental effectiveness and efficiency.
  19. Maintainsknowledge appropriate to department discipline.
  20. Provides advice,expertise and information to senior management in appropriate timely manner.
  21. Maintains apositive and professional atmosphere for patients and personnel.  Demonstrates interpersonal skills necessaryto interact effectively with patients and personnel.
  22. Directs andcontrols daily operations of all areas of the laboratory for delivery ofpatient care.
  23. Maintainstechnical expertise and performs technical responsibilities as needed.
  24. Ensureslaboratory records are retained according to state and national regulations.

Job Requirements

Required Education

Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Biology.


Required Certification: 

American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or NationalCredentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist(CLS), or equivalent required.

American Heart AssociationBLS is required.
