Directs the department's activities and resources to achieve departmental and organizational objectives for patients in the Med/Surg Unit.

Reports to: CNO

FLSA: Exempt

Develops and implements departmental goals, plans, and standards consistent with the clinical,administrative, legal, and ethical requirements/objectives of the organization.

Directs and evaluates departmental operations, including patient care delivery, information technologies, service level determination, and complaint management, to achieve performance and quality control objectives.

Plans and monitors staffing activities, including hiring, orienting, evaluating, disciplinary actions, and continuing education initiatives.

Prepares, monitors, and evaluates departmental budgets, and ensures that the department operates in compliance with allocated funding. Coordinates and directs internal/external audits.

Assist in direct patient care, functioning independently with medications, treatments, procedures, and equipment, demonstrating nursing practice in accordance with hospital philosophy, policies, and procedures.

Creates and fosters an environment that encourages professional growth.

Facilitates unit quality activities and implementing changes to improve care or processes. Assists with compliance to regulating activities such as TJC, EMTALA.

Integrates evidence-based practices into operations and clinical protocols.

Must complete all education assigned and required for the position including classroom and on-line courses.

Minimum EducationX Bachelor’s degree X Preferred __ Required

Required SkillsRequires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Certifications:

X Basic Life Support (BLS) X Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) X Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) □ Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) □ Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) □Other__________________________ □Other_________________________

Licenses: Current Tennessee or compact state RN licensure required.
