Twin County Regional Healthcare

The Director of Behavioral Health is responsible for assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluation of the care delivered to the adult and senior adult patient. He/she is responsible for planning and managing the economic status of patient care services of The Center for Behavioral Health.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) required


Minimum Work Experience

Two years’ experience as a charge nurse with demonstrated administrative and supervisory competence.

One year experience in mental health nursing required


Required Licenses

Current RN license required

BLS required

ACLS preferred

PALS preferred

ASLS preferred

Strong clinical skills with ability to react decisively in emergency situations.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Verbal and written ability to give information and present ideas essential in administrative management.

Ability to understand advanced theory and practice in nursing.

Familiarity with organization and functions of each hospital department.

Ability to discern legal implications in nursing.

Leadership ability, integrity, and initiative required.

Ability to motivate personnel.

Ability to problem-solve effectively and handle stress in a positive manner.

Maintain harmonious relationships with nursing personnel, medical staff, hospital administration, and all hospital departments.

Essential Functions

Responsible for collaborating with other departments regarding resources and services for improved patient care.

Performs functions of a registered nurse – uses the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the care of patients.

Supervise and coordinate care in a manner to ensure that patient needs are provided in an efficient manner.

Provide excellent customer service.

Conducts interviews, hires new staff, and takes and active role in the orientation of new staff.

Completes reports, projects, and unit goals within specified time-frame and according to pre-established guidelines.

Professionalism – applies knowledge to practice through participation in performance improvement activities and application of nursing research.

Pursues ongoing continuing education to remain current in practice.

Under the general direction of the CNO oversees the operation of the nursing unit.

Demonstrates flexibility in response to new and improved work processes.

Maintains EOC standards by knowing and following procedures in emergency management, hazardous material management, life safety, fire safety, infection control, and security.

Possess the knowledge to safely apply theory and practice when providing, planning and assigning nursing care.

Complies with regulatory requirements and Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.

Productivity – ensures completion of assigned workloads and moves to unassigned work at own initiative.

Documentation is reflective of care provided to ensure accurate charges are placed.

Plans strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, resource consumption, and improve patient outcomes.

Prepares budget, manages resources, establishes priorities, and modifies environment to meet patient care needs.

Education – uses the nursing process to meet patient/family needs.

Promotes and provides educational opportunities to staff.

Completes/attends all required in-services and unit staff meetings.

Functions as a role model for clinical practice to co-workers, students, customers, and Medical Staff to help build and maintain a professional environment.

Uses problem-solving methods to facilitate resolution to patient, family, and personnel situations that present in the work area/department.

Ability to work with all age groups including infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients.

Competently works with Paragon applications (computer system).

Possess the knowledge to use PYXIS medication delivery system and other unit specific equipment.

Consistently demonstrates the role of patient advocate, protector of patient rights, and provider of psych/social/cultural support.

Functional Demands

Work requires physical ability as walking, standing, sitting, etc.

Involves mental activity and problem-solving.

Talking and listening are essential in instructing and supervising personnel.

May be exposed to injury by irrational or disturbed patients, patients with communicable diseases, and/or potentially dangerous equipment.

Risk of exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous materials.

Walking and standing for long periods of time depending on workload.

Walking intermittently through halls of hospital and outside.

Sitting for long periods of time throughout day.

Lifting – Regularly assists with lifting patients (weights up to 300+ pounds waist high). Routinely lifts boxes, packages and books.

Bending required frequently, 45-90 degree angles, to check patients and operate machinery.

Reading and writing required regularly to follow job description.

Complies with organizational and regulatory policies for handling confidential patient information.

Demonstrates excellent customer service through his/her attitude and actions, consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission, and Values of the organization.

Adheres to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and TJC standards and/or standards from other accrediting bodies.
