Job Description

Person Memorial Hospital

Follows standardized procedures and helps prepare samples for testing.
Collects samples and analyze bodily fluids and substances for abnormalities. Collects blood and study blood samples used in transfusions
Operates laboratory equipment in a high-quality, effective manner.
Analyzes test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits, and reports/documents results per organizational standards.
Performs automated tests using computerized instruments & automated equipment.
Performs manual tests based on detailed instructions from a physician.
Runs tests and analyzes the results to be reported to the patient, physician or registered nurse.
Performs Quality Assurance work to ensure accuracy of equipment.
Perform other duties as assigned by laboratory supervisors or director.
Perform phlebotomy procedures in accordance with established laboratory policies and procedures.
Assist with all general clerical work such as QC, QA, and answering phones, and looking up reports.
Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment.
Review, approve, and maintain all patient and QC results on a daily basis.
Assist in developing and maintaining procedure manuals.
Accurately register client samples, results with comments, order tests, cancel and add tests as required.
Works unsupervised and uses good judgment to make independent decisions in any department assigned to.
Assist in maintaining adequate supplies in assigned departments.
Assist in evaluating new laboratory equipment and problem laboratory procedures.
Assist in training new employees on laboratory policies and procedures.

Job Requirements

Minimum Education X Bachelor’s degree □ Preferred X Required in Medical Technologist or Clinical Lab Scientist
X Master's degree is preferred.
Required Skills
 Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action. Must have the ability to verbally communicate well, must possess an appropriate manner and conduct, with ability to get along well with people. Hand-eye coordination to perform tasks such as keyboard skills, invasive procedures, etc. Constantly required to concentrate on fine details with constant interruption. Constantly required to attend to a task/function for more than 60 minutes at a time. Constantly required to understand and relate to specific ideas generated several at a time. Constantly required to remember task/assignment at beginning of a period of time extending several days.
Certifications:  X Basic Life Support (BLS) is required upon hire or must be obtained during the first week of orientation.
Licenses: ASCP or comparable National certification required or must be eligible within 6 months. BLS certification from approved American Heart Association training center must be obtained upon hire.
Minimum Work Experience
One year experience in a clinical laboratory as a technologist, hospital environment needed. For third shift, at least three years of experience is preferred.
