This position is responsible for the pre-procedure teaching, assessment of all outpatient

procedure patients through contact of the pre-admission office or phone interview.  Patients

 may include, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.  This position collects

documents, analyzes, and communicates data to determine optimal safe patient care.  Delivers

scientific  nursing care through the nursing process based on assessment planning,

implementation, long  with such clerical duties as filing preoperative reports, distribution of

completed charts and OR  schedules to various locations/departments (with charts to be

completed 24 hours prior to  scheduled surgeries).         

  • Performs a modified assessment on all patients processed through pre-admission testing, utilizing skills of observation, communication and examination and including data obtained from patient, family and other members of the healthcare team. In the event that the patient cannot keep the preoperative appointment, or does not show up, a phone call (or at least numerous attempts) will be made to the patient to obtain information and give patient education.

  • Accepts and verifies preoperative orders from surgeon and/or anesthesiologists. If certain testing is indicated but not ordered, will intervene and consult the surgeon and/or anesthesia department to verify the need and add orders to preoperative testing.

  • Ensures  test results are completed and any abnormal results are communicated to the ordering physician.

  • Provides for the privacy of the patient and medical record as by HIPPA guidelines.

  • Plans for patient teaching, regarding procedure and pre-op needs as appropriate for patient population.

  • Documents actions, responses, completely, legibly with correct abbreviations or correct form in a timely manner (assessments, daily documentation, transcription/signing of physician's orders).

  • Uses work time productively, limits personal calls and cell phone use and other personal matters to off time, is aware of unnecessary use of overtime, appropriate utilization of resources and plans care and activities accordingly. Follows the appropriate departmental and hospital wide policies, and assumes responsibility for following compliance guidelines with federal, state and local regulations within the department.

  • Performs other duties as assigned and directed to the satisfaction of manager/supervisor. Conveys any problems or concerns to immediate supervisor.

  • Informs doctor’s office of any abnormal test results in a timely manner. Also, referring the patient back to their family physician when requested by either the surgeon or anesthesiologist. This may include the faxing of reports and synopsis of the problems.

  • Assimilates all documentation for the surgical preoperative chart and puts documents together into binder, placing patient identification stickers on each page. This includes preoperative orders, testing reports, all blank documents for the day of the procedure, postoperative instructions, anesthesia forms and discharge forms.

  • Performs EKG and lab draws as needed.

  • In communication with the Anesthesia Department on any patient with a complicated medical history, taking the completed chart to the anesthesiologist for review and answering any questions and taking further orders when needed, or notifying the surgeon of any concerns expressed by the anesthesia department.

  • Attends staff meetings and in-service classes assigned, contributes ideas for improvement in operations.

  • Demonstrates knowledge and application of the HMS/CQI Nursing Documentation


Job Requirements

Current KentuckyNursing License

Current CPR

PALS, ACLS with 6months of hire

Clinical Ladder Level I.
