Assumes principle responsibility for the provision of care and support for patients in the behavioral health department.  Evaluates the needs of patients, and administers treatments and therapies that allow these patients to function as normally as possible.  Works in conjunction with the physicians and other interdisciplinary team members to develop an individualized treatment plan for each patient in response to the needs of the patient.  Must be well-versed in routine patient care and diagnosis and also in patient care for a variety of different mental disabilities and dysfunctions.  Required to deal with crisis intervention and treatment.  Must be able to provide fast and efficient care for sometimes dangerous patients.  Must be able to quickly deal with and assess the needs of the patient and to develop solutions and treatments that may need to fluctuate rapidly if the patient’s mental state changes.  Demonstrates awareness of ongoing needs of the department and provides leadership and direction to other team members in maintaining optimal standards of care.  Accountable for the supervision of all other licensed and non-licensed personnel.  Requires flexibility in scheduling and ability to work all shift patterns including week-ends and holidays to insure continuity of care and appropriateness of nursing coverage to the patients of Sovah Health - Martinsville on all units.  Responsible for providing care to all of the patient population with consideration to age–specificity and diagnosis.

Job Requirements

Education:   Graduate from an accredited school ofprofessional nursing with current licensure as a Registered Nurse from theVirginia State Board of Nursing.  BLScertification – if not current, training required.

Experience: Previous experience in acute care hospital setting preferred.  Previous experience in behavioral healthsetting preferred. Requirement will include successful completion oforientation checklist, pharmacology exam, and skills/credentials/competencyrequirements of behavioral health unit.  

Skills:  Requires strong interpersonal skills.  Requires ability to function in stressfulsituations.   Verbal ability to presentinformation and ideas related to nursing theory and practice. Ability to acceptresponsibility and accountability to prescribe, delegate, and coordinatenursing care provided on behavioral health unit as required with leadershipqualities.   Requires the cognitiveability and practical ability to provide nursing care appropriate to thepatient population assigned, considering patient age, growth and development,and diagnosis with full implementation of the nursing process to includeAssessment/Reassessment, Nursing Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation, andEvaluation.

Typical Physical Demands:  Requires full range of motion includinghandling and lifting patients and/or equipment, manual and finger dexterity andeye hand coordination.  Requires standingand walking for extensive period of time. May require lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds.  May require frequent bending, squatting andkneeling.  Requires corrected vision andhearing to normal range.  Requiresability to work under stressful conditions and/or irregular hours.  Potential for exposure to communicablediseases and/or body fluids.  Candidateswho are offered a position are required to provide fingerprints and personal informationfor a criminal history check as a condition of employment.
