Wythe County Community Hospital

Under the direction of the laboratory medical director and laboratory director, assumes the responsibility and accountability for procedures and processes in the assigned laboratory section. 
Works in collaboration with all other care disciplines to provide safe, efficient, and coordinated care for patients. 
Assists in the selection of test methodology, calibration, calibration verification, method comparisons and all other required quality assurance processes for the assigned laboratory section.
Performs procedures including patient testing, operation and maintenance of clinical laboratory equipment and quality control procedures for all essential assays in the laboratory.    
Uses the laboratory information system to register patients, enter test orders, result tests and report test results to providers. 
Collects blood specimens from patients of all ages by venipuncture or capillary puncture.
Collects chain of custody specimens according to policy and regulations.

Job Requirements

  • Must have knowledge of laboratory procedures and ability to perform laboratory functions in the essential areas of chemistry, coagulation, hematology, immunology, microbiology, clinical microscopy and transfusion medicine.
  • Must be able to collect blood specimens and chain of custody specimens according to policy.
  • Must be able to complete orientation for basic laboratory procedures and tasks in a timely manner.
  • Must have formal training in medical laboratory technology.
  • Must have an A.S. degree in Medical Technology or related science or have equivalent education and experience as defined by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988.
  • Must have a minimum of two years clinical laboratory experience.
  • Certification as a medical laboratory technician preferred.
  • Serves and is available as a resource to other laboratory personnel particularly in the assigned section. 
  • Assists in the selection of test methodology and implementation of new tests, procedures and/or analyzers.
  • Maintains inspection-readiness for the assigned section
