We are currently looking for a Surgical Tech to join our team at our Northeast Campus.

Essential Functions

  • Knowledge and skill in applying principles of asepsis and infection control.
  • Knowledge of the techniques necessary for the preparation of sterilization, proper maintenance and use of instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to perform effectively and harmoniously as a member of the operative team.
  • Ability to recognize safety hazards and initiate appropriate preventive and corrective action.
  • Conscientious effort to carry out all duties accurately with integrity in compliance with hospital and departmental policies, and recognized standards of practice.
  • Reacts quickly to changing circumstances in a calm manner displaying sound judgment to adequately cope in al situations with professional behavior.
  • Helps control hospital costs through proper safe and economical use of supplies and equipment
  • Responsible for setting up instrumentation and equipment in an orderly and aseptic manner for all surgical procedures according to the surgeon's preference card and ensuring this equipment is operational and in safe working order.
  • Together with the circulating nurse, will assist in the preparation of the operating room for each individual for each individual procedure. This would include, but not limited to, opening of supplies and obtaining of necessary equipment.
  • Assists the surgeon during surgery by passing instruments and other equipment a prescribed manner.
  • Assists in the nursing care and preparation of the pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric surgical patients.
  • During the surgical procedure, maintains an accurate account of sponges, needles and instruments and assures that all team members adhere to the principles of aseptic technique.
  • During the surgical procedure where medications are used, properly identifies and labels medications to avoid the wrong medication or solution from being inadvertently administered.
  • Properly identifies and preserves specimens received during surgery. Maintains the specimen in a prescribed manner so that the tissue can be identified by the pathology department.
  • Following the surgical procedure is responsible for maintaining the integrity of all instruments; keeping delicate and sharp instruments separate; cleaning off the back table; and making necessary communication to the instrument work room personnel regarding instrument care.
  • Responsible for taking call on a rotating basis and responding in a timely manner when called back in.
  • Responsible for keeping current in new surgical techniques and procedures and maintaining knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Maintains current and up-to-date knowledge and skills related to patient treatment by completing required annual mandatories including: HIPPA, Safety and Infection Control, TB Testing and any other competencies required by the unit/department.
  • Will respect the patient's need for confidentiality and a safe, quiet environment.
  • Pulls sterile supplies and prior to the surgical procedure according to the physician's preference card. Scheduled cases should be pulled the day before.
  • Returns all sterile items to appropriate location on a daily basis.
  • Assists with re-stocking of pre-sterilized disposable supplies.
  • May be required to assist in the circulating duties in the Operating Room under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Demonstrates initiative in performance of daily duties, personal and professional growth. Must fit in and work smoothly as a member of an efficient team.

Job Requirements

Minimum Work Experience

One year experience desired. Prior experience as a Nursing Technician or equivalent is highly preferred. Military medical specialist training is desirable.

Minimum Education/Credentials

High school diploma or equivalent
