Central Carolina Hospital


Performs sonography procedures for the diagnosis of medical conditions.  Assists radiologist with biopsy and drainage procedures.  Procedures will be performed according to departmental protocols, policies and procedures and established standards of practice. Performs high level disinfection of probes following departmental protocols.  Exercises professional judgment in performance of services and maintains a demeanor reflective of medical ethics.  Assesses and monitors patients, and provides appropriate patient care.  

Essential Functions:

1.  Verbalizes and/or demonstrates knowledge of clinical information and practices essential to assuring provision of age-specific care to all age groups.

2.  Verifies patient identification, confirms physician orders, obtains patient history / forms, assesses patient condition, explains procedures, provides patient education, and addresses patient concerns prior to performing exams.

3.  Assures proper completion of all exams requested including documentation, charging, and proper labeling of images.

4.  Performs a variety of ultrasound exams that require independent judgment and utilization of proper positioning, protocol, and techniques to obtain a diagnostic quality image to meet radiologist specifications.  Recognizes sonographic characteristics of normal and abnormal anatomy and/or unusual findings.

5.  Analyzes sonographic findings throughout the exam to ensure a comprehensive exam is completed and sufficient data is provided to the radiologist to render a diagnosis.

6.  Demonstrates proficiency in the operation and proper handling of all ultrasound equipment.  Maintains all equipment and accessories in efficient operating order; performs equipment QC, ensures preventative maintenance is performed as required, contacts service for repairs when necessary.

7.  Assists radiologists/physicians with procedures as required (biopsies, cyst aspirations, paracentesis, thoracentesis etc.).  Ensures that Standard Precautions and sterile techniques and time out procedures are utilized.

8.  Demonstrates the ability to perform High Level Disinfection of probes.  Is competent in the operation of the Trophon unit.

9.  Maintains communication and cooperation with radiologist and other ancillary departments regarding changes in protocol, scheduling of procedures, exams performed and patient flow.

10.  Demonstrates the ability to operate all computer systems utilized within the department.

11.  Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of work areas, ensures rooms are stocked, and prepares rooms prior to patient entrance.

12.  Performs clerical duties, provides clinical supervision for students and assists in patient transport as needed.

13.  Participates in departmental performance improvement activities.  May be assigned specific quality assurance / quality control duties.

14.  Works various shifts and participates in call rotation as required for the proper functioning of the department.                

Job Requirements


Associate’s degree is preferred
Training commensurate with ARDMS or ARRT US Certification is preferred
Required License:
Required Certification: 
ARRT Certification in Radiography is preferred

ARDMS Certification or ARRT Advanced Certification inUltrasound is preferred

American Heart Association BLS required
