Summary/Objective


The unit clerk is responsible for performing a variety of clerical duties relating to the updating and organizing of information on the nursing units; coordinating work within the unit as well as with other units and departments; reporting pertinent information to the immediate supervisor; responding to inquiries and requests from staff personnel, etc.


Essential Functions

  1. Perform various clerical duties relating to the updating and organizing of information on the nursing units as illustrated by the following:
    1. Maintenance tasks relating to chart order, chart accuracy and chart current data.
    2. Keep all necessary lists and schedules.
    3. Answer the telephone in a professional manner; direct calls to appropriate individuals and/or take messages.
    4. Stock units with office and medical supplies weekly; prepare requisitions to maintain established inventories.
    5. Fax and photocopy information as needed.
  2. Coordinate specific work tasks with other personnel within the unit as well as within other units and departments in order to ensure the smooth and efficient flow of information.
  3. Respond to inquiries relating to the employee’s particular area within given timeframes and within established policy.
  4. Participate in computer training and assume gradually increasing computer-related responsibilities.

Job Requirements

Education: Requires a high school diploma or GED.


Experience: At least six (6) months of hospital experience preferred. The employee will complete an orientation program of sufficient duration and content to prepare them for specific duties in the hospital and department before they are released to work independently.

License/Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) is required.
