Providence Health is looking for an experienced Respiratory Therapist III to join our team on a PRN basis. The ideal candidate will be registered with at least 1 year experience in Bronchoscopy and PFTs.

Job Summary

The Respiratory Therapist PRN performs pulmonary rehabilitation and respiratory care related procedures and responsibilities within the scope of the pulmonary rehabilitation/ respiratory policies and procedures, under general supervision and medical direction of physician orders and protocols. Accepts and transcribes verbal and telephone orders from physician on respiratory therapy procedures. Recognition of and attention to the psychosocial needs of participants and their families. Utilizes knowledge to insure the care provided meets the unique physical and psychosocial needs to be met based on the participants health condition.

Essential Functions

  • Prepare supplies and equipment prior to patient arrival to ensure that procedures begin at designated time. Schedule procedures, confirm physician orders, consent and gather all appropriate patient information prior to procedure. Utilize transport service where appropriate to facilitate patient transportation to the procedural area.
  • Prepare patients for procedures, providing education and information regarding the procedure. Answer any questions the patient may have and provide caring support throughout the procedure.
  • Support patient during bronchoscopy procedure by anticipating physician requests, assist with specimen acquisition and documentation of vital signs; completes documentation throughout procedure in cooperation with bronchoscopy nurse.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of laboratory medications on hand, medical/surgical, linen and stock supplies using just in time ordering method for inventory control.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly and safe procedure room environment by cleaning equipment, leak-testing scopes and ensuring delivery/pickup of equipment after sterile processing. Prepare bronchoscopy lab according to current policy utilizing appropriate infection control guidelines. Identify equipment malfunctions. Implement action plans for supply and equipment use and repair needs. Coordinate with Biomedical Engineering equipment performance maintenance.
  • Participate in the creation, revision and update of policies that pertain to bronchoscopy and PFT.
  • Calibrate and troubleshoot equipment by cleaning and adjusting bronchscopes, light sources, oximeters, and video equipment before, during and after procedures according to manufacturer guidelines and established policy on maintenance schedule. Perform calibration of the Body Plethysmography box. Assure that tanks of medical gases are sufficient for testing. All equipment is functional according to manufacturer's recommendations. Troubleshoot equipment operation.
  • Complete post-bronchoscopy specimen and data collection activities by processing and delivering specimens, completing paperwork, entering charges into Meditech, requisitions for virology, cytology, bacteriology and microbiology, distributing flow sheets and recording procedures in the bronchoscopy; maintain reliable records for information retrieval and fiscal control.
  • Must be able to draw, analyze and discuss ABGs in a professional manner and must be able to thoroughly maintain ABG machines. Documentation of blood gas reporting-periodic review of the pending log indicates compliance with our reporting time frame (30 minutes) and to whom the result is reported; Benchmark: Pass/Fail.
  • Adheres to all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain quality improvement initiatives by following policy and procedure for scope cleaning and use of approved scope cleaning machines with documentation records.
  • Perform moderate sedation procedures during bronchoscopy procedure in the absence of a registered nurse. (Appropriate competency verification will be maintained on file).
  • Explain PFT procedure to the patient and coach patients to obtain reproducible data that is acceptable for physician interpretation. Charge and document procedures appropriately in the Meditech intervention. Perform bedside flow volume loops during office hours.
  • Patient scanning-all patient ID bracelets will be scanned before medication administration when applicable.

Job Requirements

Minimum WorkExperience

Must be registeredrespiratory therapist. Bronchoscopy experience preferred.

Minimum Education

Must be a graduateof a National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC).CPFT preferred.

Required Licenses/Certifications

Moderate sedationcompetency.

Must be licensed bySCLLR as Respiratory Care Practitioner. Licensure must be current and in goodstanding.

Requiredcertifications include: ACLS, BLS
