Education and Experience: 

Graduated from a school of nursing and licensed as a registered nurse by the Virginia State Board of Nursing. 

CPR certification is required.

Communicates effectively verbally and in written form.  Is aware of non-verbal communication and makes appropriate use of it.

Ability to understand advanced theory and practice in nursing.

Familiarity with organization and function of each hospital department.

Ability to discern legal implications in nursing.

Leadership ability, integrity, and initiative.

Ability to motivate personnel and problem-solve effectively.

Ability to maintain harmonious relationships with nursing personnel, medical staff, hospital administration, and other hospital departments.

One year of clinical nursing experience in critical care or med/surg nursing.

Completion of ACLS & PALs per AHA standards is preferred and required within one year of employment.


Performs functions of a registered nurse – uses the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care of patients.

Supervise and coordinate care in a manner to ensure that patient needs are provided in an efficient manner.

Provide excellent customer service including patient education.

Proactive in application of critical-thinking skills to improve patient outcomes.

Professionalism – applies knowledge to practice through participation in performance improvement activities and application of nursing research.

Pursues ongoing continuing education to remain current in practice.

Charge nurse – oversees the operations of nursing unit during scheduled shift under the general direction of the unit nurse manager.

Demonstrates flexibility in response to new and improved work processes.

Maintains EOC standards by knowing and following procedures in emergency management, hazardous material management, life safety, fire safety, infection control and security.

Possess the knowledge to safely apply theory and practice when providing, planning and assigning nursing care.

Coordinates within the healthcare team in the safe delivery of medications.

Complies with regulatory requirements and Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.

Works as scheduled, without unplanned absences.

Arrives on time and ready to work.

Productivity – ensures completion of assigned workloads and moves to unassigned work at own initiative.

Documentation is reflective of care provided to ensure accurate charges are placed.

Education – uses the nursing process to meet patient/family learning needs.

Consistently communicates to co-workers, medical staff, ancillary departments and customers to promote a collaborative and cooperative environment.

Completes/attends all required in-services and unit staff meetings.

Actively participates within the unit to improve patient outcomes.

Ability to problem-solve effectively to provide quality patient care.

Ability to work with all age groups including infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients.

Competently works with Paragon applications (computer system).

Possess the knowledge to use PYXIS medication delivery system.

Familiar with ICU monitoring equipment and application of that knowledge to the patient’s condition.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Standing, sitting, walking and bending (45-90 degree angles) are required.

May require stair climbing.

Reading and writing are required to fulfill job description.

May require lifting and turning patients up to 300+ pounds (with assistance), and assisting actively in patient care on occasion.

Speech, hearing and visual acuity necessary in order to perform job requirement.

Exposure to blood, body fluid and hazardous wastes is moderate to frequent

and must carry out universal precautions according to hospital policy.

May be exposed to injury by irrational or disturbed patients, patients with communicable diseases and/or potentially dangerous equipment.

May be exposed to bad weather when escorting a discharged patient to their vehicle.
