Performs functions delegated and assigned by the registered professional nurse or licensed physician.  The Surgical Tech is responsible for administering directed care, medications while assisting physicians with procedures.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience: 
Graduated and certified from an accredited school surgical assisting preferred.
CPR certification is required.
Must take call and respond within 30 minutes of the hospital.
Communicates effectively verbally and in written form.  Is aware of non-verbal communication and makes appropriate use of it.
Familiarity with organization and functions of each hospital department.
Ability to discern legal implications practice.
Possess leadership ability, integrity, and initiative.  Ability to motivate personnel.
Ability to problem-solves effectively and handles stress in a positive manner.
Maintain harmonious relationships with nursing personnel, medical staff, hospital administration, and all hospital departments.
Responsibilities:
Promotes the mission, vision, and values of Twin County Memorial Hospital.
Provides competent and ethical care under the direct supervision of the surgeon within the legal standards of practice as applicable to the Surgical Tech by:
•           Recognizing safety hazards and initiating appropriate preventative and corrective actions;
•           Providing exposure through use of instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging techniques;
•           Coagulating bleeding points through physician controlled instrumentation and performing other procedures in collaboration with the surgeon;
•           Stapling skin tissue in collaboration with the surgeon;
•           Assisting with cannulation and decanulation procedures, if indicated.
•           Setting up and maintain an efficient sterile field.
Serves as an educator, mentor, consultant, and resource.
Maintains regulatory, credentialing, and privileging requirements.
Completes annual job-specific competencies.
Acts as a patient advocate and maintains privacy and confidentiality of all appropriate information.
Ability to work with an Electronic Medical Record.
Professionalism – Applies knowledge to practice through participation in performance improvement.
Consistently communicates to co-workers, medical staff, and ancillary departments and customers to promote a collaborative and cooperative environment.
Reliability – Ensures completion of assigned workloads and moves to unassigned work at own initiative.
Possess knowledge for infection control, decontamination, and sterilization techniques.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Must sit for extended periods of time.
Must stand for long periods of time, at times standing on stools, throughout the day.
Must walk intermittently throughout the day in the OR and/or Endoscopy Suite, to other nursing units, to other hospital departments, to the parking lot, and up and down stairs.  Walking surfaces vary from concrete floors in the hospital to paved parking lots.
Must transport patients by stretcher, bed, and wheelchair to the OR and back to the nursing units.
Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs.
Bending is required regularly in caring for patients.  Bending ranges from 45-90 angles.
Reading and writing is required regularly to follow job description.
Exposure to infectious diseases regularly to meet OSHA standards.
Exposure to hazardous materials regularly.
May work in excess of the eight hour scheduled day.
Scheduled to work hours to include evenings, nights and on-call.
Must work under unusual stress and fatigue.
Must possess mental ability to problem-solve and implement a solution.
Talking and listening are essential in instructing and supervising personnel and in caring for patients.
May be exposed to injury by irrational, combative, or disturbed patients, patients with communicable diseases, and/or potentially dangerous equipment.
Must work in the presence of dangerous gases, chemicals, lasers, x-ray and highly technical equipment.
